ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Lynnette, a native Minnesotan, fell in love with intaglio printmaking at Hamline University while studying under Leo Lasansky and then continued her visual arts education under his father Mauricio Lasansky in the MFA Program at the University of Iowa.  She maintained her art practice while pursuing a career in medical device marketing and raising a family. She has actively participated in juried and selected group exhibitions locally and nationally, including exhibiting twice at the Katherine Nash Gallery, Regis Center for the Arts, University of Minnesota (2016 Juror Lyndell King - Director of the Weisman Museum & 2010 Juror Lucy Lippard).  In 2018 her print “Wood Nymph” was selected by Juror Crawford Alexander Mann, curator for Prints and Drawings, Smithsonian American Art Museum for exhibition in Stand Out Prints - International Juried Exhibition, Highpoint Center for Printmaking, MN.

A long-term member of Women’s Caucus for Art, Lynnette served as MN WCA Chapter President, current member of Art To Change The World, and International Association of Women Arts and a past member of WARM (Women’s Art Resources). Now living her dream, she is a full time artist and coop member of Highpoint Center for Printmaking.  In addition Lynnette serves on the Fine Arts Board at Plymouth Congregational Church and is Gallery Committee Chair and curator for which the Howard Conn Gallery, Minneapolis, MN.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The core essence of my work is documenting the life force that animates all living organisms. The pure energy of this force takes various forms.  It can be found in nature, human endeavors or spirituality, by making conscious contact with the Divine. The life force energy in my work is intended to make a positive impact on the world.

My themes are about spirituality, social justice, art and healing. My process is intuitive, similar to Nancy Azara’s Spirit Taking Form: Art Making as a Spiritual Practice. Rarely planning the project out in detail, I prefer to experiment iteratively with ideas and materials. I use both abstract and figurative images, and often combine both styles, as well as multiple media. Each project begins with a meditation - becoming quiet, listening to the still small voice within. The key message emerges - along with images, colors, and shapes - flavored by the issue that concerns me or the emotion I am experiencing at the time. Sometimes I do research, for example when I am working on a theme like immigration; I seek out the most compelling images and stories to flesh out my ideas.

My work is painterly, with flowing lines, and marked by the obvious sign of the hand.  Each piece has its own energy derived by the intensity of the marks but also the choice of colors, vivid, sometimes joyful, other times muted, pensive or sorrowful. My palette varies greatly.

Trained as a printmaker, primarily intaglio, my practice also includes drawing and painting. I love the three dimensionality of intaglio, the richness of the marks, and the surprises.  My intaglio copper plates are heavily worked, and I do not completely erase all of the mistakes - water marks, scratches, and etching breakthroughs. Like we humans, the work is flawed. But these flaws are the evidence of the life and process of the piece - the scars and “happy accidents” that give it depth, richness and a sense of personal history. I do not strive to be perfect in my art, but rather authentic.

I aim to make a psychological, emotional contact with the viewer and provide a hopeful, inspiring message or a call to action. Sometimes narrative is used to tell a story, other times the piece is purely abstract. But, my art is essentially about our life force, using our time on earth wisely for a purpose greater than ourselves.
