From Mania to Creative Breakthrough

At the start of the pandemic lockdown, I became manic, jumping from room to room, project to project, without the ability to focus or complete anything. To break the mania and try to start making art again, I decided to chop up some old intaglio plates from college (1974). The intaglio image was of a life drawing model dressed as a geisha. There were two large plates, one for black ink, the other for color. I cut them into seven smaller plates of various sizes and began reworking them. Next I started printing experiments, first in black and white, then black and red, then multicolor. Finally I started printing them intaglio with relief, stencils, in many colors, with multiple layers, and in different directions. Creative Play! Starting first working with small scrap prints and painting them with acrylic. It was like doodling. No expectations for a “product”. After awhile I was able to work large again - similar to what I was doing before the pandemic hit. It worked. The mania left. My confidence is returning and I’m have fun working again.
